The truth is, large parts of Accra and its surrounding areas need serious redevelopment and proper planning.
People have built on waterways and flood-prone areas. Others have blocked drainage systems with buildings, and some have even constructed houses around electricity poles that are still fully wired. During the recent heavy rains, I saw many people sweeping rubbish straight into the gutters. Sadly, many roadside shops continue this practice without any regard for the consequences.
What was even more disappointing was seeing a police vehicle drive past without taking any action or holding anyone accountable.
Until we enforce our laws, protect our drainage systems, and put proper urban planning ahead of personal interests, we'll keep facing the same devastating floods. Ghana deserves better.

Where are the so-called ministers and public officials whom the citizens voted into office? Leadership is about action, not just promises.
The government should establish effective Town Councils and strengthen local sanitation services by providing free waste bins in every community. This would not only improve sanitation but also create employment opportunities for people responsible for waste collection, recycling, and environmental management.
There must also be designated waste disposal and segregation sites so that rubbish is properly sorted and managed. Waste can even be converted into electricity and other useful resources instead of polluting our environment.
At the same time, every resident of Accra must take personal responsibility. Anyone caught dumping rubbish into gutters, drains, or open spaces should face strict penalties. Keeping our city clean is a shared responsibility between government and citizens.
Enough of the speeches. Ghana deserves decisive action before another heavy rainfall leads to another preventable tragedy
