The Prophet ﷺ said: “Allah has protective jealousy (ghayrah), and Allah’s protective jealousy is provoked when a believer does something that Allah has forbidden.” (Sahih al-Bukhari & Muslim). Just as a son would feel strong protective anger (ghayrah, protective “jealousy” pain + anger) when he sees his mom doing something shameful, like cheating on his dad or acting immorally in public. He doesn’t envy her, he’s hurt because he loves and respects her, and wants to protect her dignity and the family’s honor.
