Have you ever seen a snake yawn? 🤣 According to Mississippi Museum of Natural Science: "Snakes appear to yawn but a better term would be “mouth gaping”. It's believed they do this for several reasons, but being tired isn't one. They could be flexing their jaws in preparation to eat, or forcing their jaws back to their normal position after eating. Another thought is that they open their mouths wide to allow better access of the Jacobson’s organ to process environmental information." I can see some muscle constriction in its body so maybe we just missed meal time and this beauty is putting everything back in place. It does look like he/she is wiggling things back in place. BUT, we also watched watersnakes mating just before we saw this guy so maybe he's looking for love? Whatever the reason, this is an awesome little nonvenomous Watersnake. I think it's a Florida Banded but could be a Southern...I am sure you snake experts will let us know which 😁 Lots of times folks refer to nonvemous snakes as a "good guy" but all snakes are good guys. Each has its own niche and helps keep our ecosystem well balanced. AND humans benefit directly from both venomous and non venomous snakes. How? One key way is tick and tick-borne disease control. A study done at University of MD showed that a single Rattlesnake will consume over 4000 ticks per year! They prey of rattlesnakes, and other snakes, is often small mammals such as rats which are host to fleas and ticks so it's like a triple pest control system! If you have snakes in your yard you are lucky to have nature's "pest" control! If you do not want beneficial beauties in your yard, please do not unalive them! Contact a snake relocator...there are many who are easily found online. Lots of us welcome snakes onto our property so please call for relocation. Also, if you have a dog and are worried about venomous snakes, there are training classes to teach your dog how to avoid snakes. With all the tech and resources at our fingertips today, we can keep everyone alive and thriving ❤️ February, Sweetwater Wetlands Park, FL #snakes #AnimalFacts #wildlife #nature #conservation
