This collection of portraits has taken me many, many weeks to work through, and I still haven’t finished scanning them all. Discovered in Tasmania, Australia, each glass plate negative captures a face and a moment in time that has remained unseen for more than a century. The collection appears to have a connection to photographer Louis Konrad, who operated from 60 Cameron Street, Launceston. Newspaper advertisements from the time promoted his studio as one of the most complete in Tasmania and highlighted his experience as a crayon artist at Sydney’s renowned Falk Studio. Konrad offered cabinet portraits for just 10 shillings per dozen (less than one shilling each), while also specialising in portrait enlargements, making professional photography increasingly accessible to Tasmanian families in the early 1900s. More than a century later, these portraits offer a remarkable glimpse into the people who once stepped through the doors of his studio. I’m still uncovering their stories, one glass plate at a time.
