After I shared some free resources for building mobile apps, I got a comment saying “stop BS’ing, nothing is free”. Technically he is probably right because these companies may use your data, or try to lock you into their platforms so you start paying later. However, when you are validating an app idea, you should use as many free tiers as possible before spending stupid amounts of money, because paying for services before you have users or revenue does not make sense. For example, RevenueCat can handle your billing and subscriptions, OneSignal offers unlimited push notifications on its free tier, and Sentry is free until you need additional features. We are in a great space where after the cost of building the app, you can support it month-to-month for almost nothing beyond the Apple Developer or Google Play Store fee, because most of the third-party tools you need, including push notifications, subscriptions, monitoring, and even AI, offer some type of free tier. These companies might be trying to pull you into their ecosystems, but you should still use those free tiers to validate your idea, get your first customers, and avoid paying until your app is making money or has enough traction to fund itself. Thoughts?
