In the 1980s, Italy faced a specific challenge: they needed to rapidly defend their extensive coastline and borders against potential amphibious or airborne landings. Since transferring heavy tracked MBTs took too much time, a wheeled vehicle capable of driving down highways at speeds exceeding 100 km/h under its own power was the perfect solution. The Iveco Fiat Oto Melara consortium developed the Centauro as a highly mobile "hunter" designed to reach strategic positions before the enemy, deliver a hard-hitting strike, and quickly retreat. Key Technical Features The foundation of the early and mid-production batches of the Centauro 1 rests on three pillars: Firepower: An Italian 105mm Oto Melara rifled gun (52 caliber barrel length). It features a low-recoil system to prevent the wheeled chassis from tipping over when firing sideways. Despite the lower recoil, it fires standard NATO ammunition (including APFSDS) and hits just as hard as the gun found on the Leopard 1. Mobility: It is powered by a 520 hp Iveco V6 engine located in the front, which provides additional protection for the crew from head-on hits. The 8x8 drive train with steering axles (the first, second, and—at low speeds—fourth axles steer) makes this massive vehicle surprisingly agile. Electronics: It utilizes the TURMS Fire Control System (FCS)—the exact same system installed on the Italian C1 Ariete main battle tank. It features thermal imaging, a laser rangefinder, and a digital ballistic computer, allowing the vehicle to fire accurately both on the move and at night. Armor and Upgrades (ROMOR) Because it is a wheeled vehicle, the armor is a compromise. In its base configuration, the aluminum-steel hull can only withstand heavy machine gun fire (12.7 mm) and artillery shell fragments. To protect the Centauro from light autocannons during overseas deployments (such as in Somalia or the Balkans), specialized add-on armor packages were developed: ROMOR-A: Explosive Reactive Armor (ERA) blocks fitted onto the hull sides and turret to counter shaped-charge warheads (RPGs). Additional Screens: Later passive composite armor kits were introduced to increase protection against 30mm rounds across the frontal arc. Evolution: Centauro 120mm and Centauro II The concept proved so successful that the Centauro 1 chassis became a platform for deep modifications: Centauro 120mm: This variant used the original chassis to test the HITFACT turret armed with a 120mm smoothbore gun (45 caliber length). This turned the light platform into a true tank killer capable of firing the same rounds as the Leopard 2 or M1 Abrams. Centauro II: The next generation of wheeled tanks.
