The Iraqi Air Force before    of the strongest air forces in the Middle East, especially during the 1980s. Founded in 1931, it began with simple British aircraft and gradually developed over time. During the 1970s and 1980s, Iraq received significant military support and advanced equipment from the Soviet Union and France, which helped build a diverse and advanced air fleet. At its peak during the Iran–Iraq War, the Iraqi Air Force operated hundreds of combat aircraft, including MiG-21, MiG-23, MiG-25, MiG-29, Su-22, Su-24, and Mirage F1. There were also recorded instances of direct air combat, most notably the engagement attributed to Zuhair Dawood, who is reported to have shot down an F/A-18 Hornet in the early days of the war. From the outset of the conflict, coalition forces established near-total air superiority using advanced aircraft, early warning systems, and electronic warfare capabilities.
