Thankfully in my language we just stay with original mythological names (adapted to our pronunciation and language), Syreny for women and Trytony for men. From what I know in english there's also Sirens and Tritons, but there's a bit different from mermaids and mermens (??? I think so at least?), while in my language it's just Syreny and Trytony

honestly didn’t even know they were called merman in english bc my first language is italian, and it italian they’re called “tritone” which idfk what it means 😭😭

People are using the modern meaning of “maid,” but that’s not what it originally meant “Mermaid” is an old word, and back then “maid” meant “maiden” or “young woman,” not a servant. It basically meant “maiden of the sea”
