This issue of the risen sea level needs to be addressed by the Lagos government.... while Lagos Island is not generally below sea level. Most of it sits only about 1–5 meters (3–16 feet) above mean sea level, though some reclaimed and low-lying areas are closer to 0–1 meter (0–3 feet). Because it is so low and surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the Lagos Island is vulnerable to Coastal flooding during heavy rain. Storm surges from the Atlantic. Rising sea levels caused by climate change. Land subsidence (the ground slowly sinking in some areas due to groundwater extraction and construction), which can worsen flooding. Lagos geography means that planning for flooding and sea-level rise will be an ongoing challenge. The good news is that many coastal cities around the world have successfully adapted through better drainages, flood barriers, elevated infrastructure, and thoughtful urban planning. With sustained investment and good governance, Lagos can continue to grow while reducing these risks.
