It's strange to me that ancient Greek and Roman paintings are very well done with great tone and detail but the paint on their statues looks like total crap. Is it not possible that the remnants of block colour on the statues today are just the surviving base coat and would have had detail on top?

this actually comes up in theater a lot. especially if it's a more campy musical. For example, when shows like R&H Cinderella, Shakespeare, or even Shrek require a scroll or an invite, it's standard practice to make it look aged, despite the fact it SHOULD be made brand new at the time. However, if you really truly made a new looking scroll, the audience would find it weird to see.

Another one is that the Aztec Empire wasn't in the ancient world, it coincided with the Renaissance in Europe. The University of al-Qarawiyyin in Morocco was open for 600 years before the Aztec Empire was founded. Bologna, Oxford, Cambridge, Naples, Heidleburg, Tunis, Istanbul, Paris, Salamanca all had universities that were already established for centuries at that stage. We just cannot accept that it wasn't part of the ancient world because it doesn't fit in with our view of linear history

To be fair to those repainted statues, they don’t represent the shading and details (as far as I’m aware) as it’s pleased on small amounts of paints left on the statues. So like those probably were the base colors
