I agree with you Viv. I'll preface my post by saying I do tip a standard 15% for good service. With that said, IMO tipping culture is bad because it shifts the responsibility of paying workers a fair wage from employers to customers. Employees shouldn’t have to depend on the generosity, mood, or financial situation of strangers to earn a stable income. Businesses should pay their employees fairly. Customers should pay for good service, not be expected to make up part of an employee’s wages.

Tipping should be proportional to service. The point of tipping is to incentivize good service. Thus crappy service deserves a crappy tip. Excellent service deserves an excellent tip. The purpose of tipping is to “reward/ punish” the service. Blindly tipping 15-20% prevents that from happening.

I’m a waiter . I have done this job on and off for years . If a customer gives you a small tip or no tip, it’s not the end of the world. That is the game. You should be positive and if you are it should balance out later. There is always a better tip coming.

Some restaurants credit card reader set 25% tip now including carryout orders, if you want to pay less than 25% , you will have to change manually, I stopped going to those restaurants . I saw tip jar many businesses like washroom , coffee shop , carryout .... tipping is out of control in US .
