It’s less they are high trust and more the police system in Japan has like, a 90% conviction rate. Nobody wants to risk getting arrested and thrown in jail, so everyone is super restrained and responsible

i was climbing mt fuji and lost my inhaler and $200USD in cash somehow on my way up. on my way back down about 4 hours later, we found them stacked neatly on top of a rock, with my inhaler holding down the cash! hundreds of people traveled that path between when i lost it and when we found it again.

depending on where you are in america you still can lol I'm sure it's the same for Europe. I'm also sure that Japan also has places that are more known for having stuff stolen but they are also a LOT more aggressive about how they enforce their laws when they do so less people feel inclined. anyways the point is that it's all about location
