Royal Mail Manager Convicted After Stealing £50,160 From Posted Parcels_Full-HD. In December 2025, Jonathan Brooking — a customer operations manager at the Royal Mail Bridgend sorting office in Bridgend, Wales, with nearly two decades of service dating to his start as a postman in 2004 — was sentenced at Swansea Crown Court after pleading guilty to one count of theft following an investigation that traced £50,160 in cash deposits directly to his Nationwide bank account. Between September 2022 and June 2024, Brooking systematically intercepted Special Delivery parcels he believed contained cash, taking them home and depositing the money into his personal account across a period of roughly eighteen months. The investigation was triggered by a pattern of complaints about missing cash parcels in the Bridgend area, prompting Royal Mail investigators to analyse delivery data, work rotas, and ultimately install covert CCTV inside the office. The smoking gun was behavioural: the thefts stopped entirely while managers were briefed on the hidden cameras and resumed the moment the equipment was removed, a stop-start pattern pointing directly to someone with inside knowledge of the surveillance operation. Brooking denied any involvement during a voluntary interview, resigned the following day, and surrendered his £33,428 pension to the company. Judge Geraint Walters sentenced him to twelve months' imprisonment suspended for two years, alongside 300 hours of unpaid work and a rehabilitation requirement. Royal Mail paid approximately £47,000 in compensation to affected customers — among them individuals who had entrusted the recorded postal service with cash precisely because they believed it was guaranteed.
