You mean if I had a nickel for every time Russia and Germany split Poland together…I would have two nickels? Yep, it’s insane. And only half true, the Austrians were in on the party too. A Habsburg never misses a good feast! But how did this happen? Poland went from a medieval heavyweight, to a renaissance titan, to the sick man of Eastern Europe! But it wasn’t supposed to be this way. Sadly in many ways it all points back to a terribly weak line of “kings” (elected by the nobles) and a decentralize state. The Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth looked massive on a map. At its peak it stretched from the Baltic almost to the Black Sea and held nearly 12 million people. Warsaw had swagger, the cavalry was legendary, and the Winged Hussars became one of the most feared shock forces in Europe. These lunatics literally charged Ottoman lines at Vienna in 1683 and helped save the Habsburgs themselves. Imagine dying to protect Austria…only for Austria to later help erase your country from the map. History has a dark sense of humor. But underneath the glory was a political system slowly committing suicide. The nobles loved their “Golden Liberty,” which basically meant the king was weak and every powerful magnate wanted to be his own little emperor. Worst of all was the liberum veto. One single noble in parliament could scream “No!” and instantly collapse the entire session. No taxes passed. No army reforms. No centralized power. Foreign powers quickly realized they didn’t even need to invade Poland to weaken it…they could just bribe one nobleman. And while Poland argued endlessly, its neighbors evolved into military machines. Kingdom of Prussia became hyper militarized under Frederick the Great. Russian Empire centralized under rulers like Catherine the Great. Habsburg monarchy tightened its bureaucracy and army. Poland meanwhile got battered by Swedish invasions, Cossack uprisings, Russian interference, and internal corruption. By the late 1700s the neighbors stopped pretending to “protect stability” and simply carved the country apart in three partitions between 1772 and 1795. Poland disappeared entirely from the map for 123 years. One Polish noble supposedly said, “This nation is held together by disorder.” Turns out disorder is a terrible shield against empires with cannons. #prussia #frederickthegreat #poland
