@weddingprocass: I don’t know if this is a hot take or not, but I don’t think there is a minimum monetary gift that should be given at a wedding… Every single guest should gift what they are comfortable gifting, period 👏👏 I hate the phrase “cover your plate” #w#weddinghottakew#weddingopinionw#weddingplanningtipw#weddingtiktokweddingvendor
Sorry, but I disagree that a gift is mandatory! Though your price range may vary. But something is absolutely required as a token at the very least.

Disagree. You shouldn't go to a wedding without a gift.. How are you choosing someone money to celebrate them? I knkw people who love you won't mind, but it's still rude.

Oh how I wish everything you’re saying is true. Unfortunately, most every wedding. I’ve been to in the last 25 years, the pride and groom have made it very well known how much each person is costing them to be at the wedding. They are absolutely expecting to at least break even on what they spent. Most are looking to make enough money to cover their honeymoon. So well etiquette might say that it’s not required to give a gift, the bride and groom absolutely expect an envelope full of money not a sweet note.

One of my FAVORITE gifts… was from the granddaughter of a friend of my mother in law. The little girl wanted to bring something … herself. She went into grandmas garden and found a pretty white rock. I still have the rock.

I dont think you should go empty handed, but I don’t think you need to spend over your means to attend either. If you really can’t afford much, consider a first married Christmas ornament (if they celebrate).

I totally agree that the gift does not need to be expensive or “cover your plate.” It does not even need to be monetary. But imo, you should always bring a gift. It could be a card, it could be something handmade, it could be something that cost $20. There’s not an “entrance fee” to a wedding, but being a part of a community and expressing support to your loved ones requires effort

I’m 70. When did giving money become a thing? My training was and, in my experience, it still seems to be that giving money is tacky. When and where has this changed. (PS: training includes that bringing a gift to the wedding is similarily found to be avoided. Same question to this).

For my wedding 35 years ago we invited people to make a donation to a charity instead of a gift. We chose 4 charities. My wonderful in-laws made a donation to each one. My weird family absolutely couldn’t wrap their heads around the concept. I still find that funny. 😂

People make things way harder than they have to be. Just use common sense. Give what you feel comfortable with and can afford. If someone is offended, then they are the problem. I either give cash or something off the registry. That’s it! If it’s not good enough, oh well! That’s a YOU problem!

This is how it *should* be but I know couples that would disagree. A gift is absolutely expected. Unless you’re very close with the couple and they know your financial situation if you can’t afford a gift you shouldn’t go. I know that sounds terrible but I’ve personally witnessed 3 separate families from 3 separate weddings talking bad abt someone that didn’t gift and the relationship was changed bc of it.

Canadians and Americans of Italian origin have the same "busta" aka envelope unwritten rule ie you cover the plate for each guest at the wedding + you add a gift amount. The gift amount will vary depending on the relationship with the bride and groom. For example if the plate estimate is $175 pp that's 350 + 150 gift = 500$. Yes, this seems like a lot but it's done in the "what goes around, comes around" frame of mind.

I give a monetary amount depending on how close I am with the bride or groom. Close family gets the most.

You’re absolutely right about the gift thing. It’s such a huge conversation but for my husband and I personally we just wanted our friends and families to enjoy our marriage and have a party and provide food for them. We were not expecting any gifts. Nowadays, most of us have everything we need I think years ago it was giving people or bride and groom gifts because they were just starting out and had nothing. I can remember in the 70s going to weddings and people got bath towels stuff for the kitchen. Simple gifts

Here it’s considered rude to ask what the cost is per person, unless you are planning your own wedding and are asking for that reason. It’s polite to just be grateful for a gift of any kind. I don’t know if many people do a gift list any more as most couples already live together or have left home and already have household things.

This is definitely different region to region and also cultural. In NY/NJ, weddings are a ridiculous amount of money. Many venues $250-$400+per person. It is customary to give a monetary gift. The amount is up to the guest. Commonplace in my family is if a couple is attending a friend/colleague wedding, it is about $250per person —for a couple $500. Family, more. Many others give more, or less. The reality is that people need to stay within their own budget for gift giving and as a bride, be grateful and gracious for anything you do receive.
