Yes, before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), the mosque... Yes. Indeed, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)... Yes. Likewise, until around the year one hundred after the Hijrah. Yes. Then the people needed to expand the mosque, and it was only possible to expand it from this side, from the eastern side. So they expanded it from there, and at that point the entire room became included within the mosque. It remained an ordinary room until it gradually developed into what you see today. We say that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was not buried in the mosque; rather, he was buried in his house. And the Prophet's Mosque was not built over his grave. Rather, he himself built the mosque during his lifetime. This is not evidence for those who worship or venerate graves in an unlawful manner—not at all. Rather, this is one of Satan's deceptions. Just as he deceived the people of the pre-Islamic era into considering carrion lawful, they said: "If what we slaughter with our own hands is lawful for us, even though we killed it, then why should carrion, which Allah caused to die, not be lawful?" They made this corrupt analogy. Likewise, when Allah commanded Satan to prostrate to Adam, he refused and said: "I am better than him. You created me from fire, and You created him from clay." These false analogies are nothing but inspirations from Satan. He seeks to lead the children of Adam astray, for he pledged this before Allah, saying: "Because You have led me astray, I will surely sit in wait for them on Your straight path. Then I will come to them from before them, from behind them, from their right, and from their left, and You will find most of them ungrateful." Now we say: the grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is not in the mosque; rather, it is in a separate chamber. The Prophet's Mosque was not built over his grave. Instead, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) built the mosque during his lifetime.
