What HTTPs actually is and why it is more secure than HTTP. The "S" at the end of HTTPS stands for Secure, representing an extension of the standard HTTP protocol that utilizes Transport Layer Security, or TLS, to encrypt all data moving between a web browser and a website. Modern web browsers like Chrome and Safari treat this protocol as a baseline requirement, actively flagging legacy HTTP sites as open security threats with an explicit "Not Secure" warning. The inherent danger of standard HTTP stems from Plaintext Transmission. When you navigate an unencrypted HTTP site, every password you input, page you view, or form you submit is broadcast across the web as raw text. Anyone operating on your same local Wi-Fi network can utilize basic packet-sniffing software to intercept those data bundles and read your confidential credentials clearly. HTTPS entirely mitigates this vulnerability through a two-step mathematical process known as an Asymmetric Handshake. When you establish a connection to a secure website, the host server presents a digital SSL/TLS Certificate issued by a verified third-party authority to confirm its legitimacy. This certificate embeds a Public Key that is visible to the entire network. Your browser automatically leverages this public key to encrypt a temporary, unique session key and transmits it back to the server. Owing to the principles of asymmetric cryptography, data scrambled by the public key can only be unlocked by the server's strictly protected Private Key. Once the server decrypts the package using this hidden key, both sides share the exact same secret session key. This establishes an isolated, bi-directional tunnel where all subsequent traffic is transformed into randomized gibberish that is impossible for an outside attacker to decode. Fortunately, these cryptographic algorithms are so highly optimized that modern hardware executes the entire handshake in mere milliseconds without delaying your page load times.
