@pootythecrow: My best friend @Ivy Enchanté speaks up for her people, even though many of them oppressed them. And in doing so, has won their hearts and opened their minds. May we all be a little more like Ivy. 🇱🇧 #beirut

I think it's fine for people to protect their own peace and nor want to educate etc, but we've somehow framed it as the moral choice when engaging with people who don't see things your way yet, trying to educate, trying to find common ground, trying to change the world for the better is what actually drives change (that and protest and disruption).

i think this is just because western homophobia is more individual while arab homophobia is a cultural issue, when everyone in your country is homophobic you just have to live with that vs when you can be out and there are non homophobic people you will judge the homophobes more. idk i just don’t think this is something you should learn from arab queers because it’s very different

it's so interesting, because queer arabs live in communities that almost force them to consider educating/enlightening others to ensure safety, if they wish to even exist as themselves there without (even only 50%) hiding. People there are incredibly judgemental and stuck in their opinions, your friend is so fucking strong for meeting that with such respectful and admirable resistance. She's so cool.

Not queer American, but living in Saudi Arabia (and I love Lebanon so much) - I love this message and it gives me hope for the future. I hope Americans can learn this important lesson of compassion.

This is an incredible story to share. Thankyou so much for telling it so eloquently. I spend my life as a queer person and activist trying to have open discussions with people. Calm, respectful, two way conversations. I know I can’t change the minds of everyone but even if I get one person to stop and just think for a minute, I feel I’ve achieved.

I usually think, do I see good in this person? As someone who had to unlearn a lot of stuff as I got older I can understand how someone can end up with the wrong views. But if shown kindness a lot of people are willing to let their guard down enough to learn and grow. The thing is if no one ever took the time to explain to you why you are wrong how are you supposed to know better. I am not saying everyone is worth the time but if I see good in someone I think it's ufair and unproductive to deem them unsaveable just like that.

This is moreso a rebuttal to pink washing used by western people to other western people but does not apply to us if that makes sense. It’s not how we think. As a queer Arab my queer identity is not above my Arab one. I don’t even think it’s “selfless” to fight for our countries bc we ARE Arab. I don’t think Syrians will ever stop being homophobic but that just has nothing to do with my activism.
