@rachelcruze: If you're trying to decide where to keep your emergency fund, I'd choose a high-yield savings account. 👏🏻 You still have easy access to your money when you need it, but it's not quite as easy to spend as the money sitting in your checking account. Plus, you'll usually earn a little more interest while it sits there. #hysa #investing #savings
I have both but my high yield interest keeps falling 😩

High yield savings account usually requires a significant amount to open and requires you to keep it high. 1k won’t cut it

Still no one has explained the difference between them that I understand. Someone said HYSA are online only, but my local credit union has one. My bank mm is currently earning 4.25%.

Can you withdraw money from it whenever with any fees?

This is wrong. You should put it into a MM etf or fund. Hysa is taxed at highest marginal rate

You didn’t really explain why. Taxes are treated differently between the two.

What about both? We have a HYSA with our 3-6 months of expenses and then our money market is for savings for fun or things we are saving up for.

Money market typically higher rate and although not fully liquid it can be sold and made available same day. I love both, but if I’m forced to pick one for my excess cash, I’m going MM

My MM has the ability to write checks. It essentially works like a checking account but with investments so because of this I ditched my hysa and moved it to a MM

My money market at Fidelity allows for a debit card and check writing capabilities. Main difference is a higher savings account is a bank vehicle so it’s FDIC insured versus a money market fund is technically an investment product, which is not FDIC insured, but it is SIPC insured if it’s held at one of the bigger known investment firms. Although a money market fund is set to maintain a net asset value of one dollar, money market fund also can technically “ break the dollar,” which means you can lose money. However, a bigger well-known firms that probably has never happened/is very likely to not happen.

Agree. Boring, separate and easy to reach, but not so easy you dip into it for takeout.
