@houseofrhumba: JOHNNY BOKELO. In the history of Congolese music, the title of classic has rarely been attributed to a musician's songs. One of the figures and central character of Congolese music, Johnny Bokelo, has achieved unprecedented feats in the musical world by recording songs which, for several generations, have been included in popular manifestos in Congo, Africa and everywhere else. Johnny made his musical debut in 1958 with his brother Alberto Basaba, before settling in Léopoldville where he founded the “Conga jazz” orchestra with his brothers. With the closure of the “Esengo” editions in the 1960s, “Conga jazz” which gave way to “Conga success” would propel the musical careers of the brothers Jean Bokelo, Jean José Lohata, and Johnny Bokole. The latter was already welcomed by the “Loningisa” editions before recording with the “Ok jazz” orchestra. His first two great songs “Makanisi makondisi ngaï” and “Elongi na yo ya bomwana” left their mark. Johnny Bokelo Isenge has established himself as an accomplished improviser and organizer by dedicatedly producing major titles such as “Tambola na mokili” and “Mwambe”. His titles are today classified among the great classics of Congolese music.
