To be fair, I think the witch being shocked is mentioned specifically to point out that she *didn't* summon Samuel's apparition (not that she's not also afraid of Saul). I take the view that God sent Samuel's apparition down both to shock Saul and the witch, and that the witch was expecting just a voice or nothing at all. To me, the story of the witch is more than just ontology, its about Saul being told in no uncertain terms that he needs to make his own decisions and that the dead are gone and cannot speak for him. Necromancy is bad not because the act is an intrinsic evil, but because it leads to both infinite indecision until someone gives you "permisson", as well as making you susceptible to manipulation by necromancers who, assuming they're even true mediums, can just lie.

I’ve been looking into orthodoxy and one thing I’m noticing, as someone with an evangelical background, we have written so much into the text that just isn’t there. I originally had the same perspective as taco but after looking in the scriptures that is adding context that isn’t present.

This idea of soul sleep is easily disproven by Christs words on the cross. He said “today you will be with me in paradise”

There's a messianic Jewish Rabbi I've chatted with a few times. interesting dude, I'll see if I can find his info. he pointed out that in some early Jewish traditions departed family members would return to give messages to their descendants and they were called "messengers", the original Hebrew word for "angels". even ignoring that, when you look at how complex the physical world is, I find it hard to believe that the spiritual world would be somehow less complex.

Is it possible that a vision of a dead relative COULD be a demon trying to tempt or deceive us? My wife and I both had dreams of our dead parents (my mother, her father) and they were realistic but something gave them away and we both called them out and the demon exposed itself before the dreams ended. We both had these dreams and only once each. Mine was 9 years ago a month after my mother passed and hers was 3 months ago about a month after her father passed. I don't think every ghost would be a demon but a demon could pose as a relative to tempt us to try and call on the dead relative, right?

Of course they exist. Sure you're gonna have a hard time proving it empirically but I have had experiences that I am confident are ghosts. Other people can decide for themselves based kn their own experiences

It was forbidden because in order to contact the unalive you would have to appeal to Satan……not necessarily because it works but because you are asking Satan to do something for you.
