Former property manager here: Important step 0! Be sure on once you get keys, if not during the process, be sure to go room to room, floor to ceiling video everything and take photos of any damage. go slow and be picky. make notes of any damage or cleanliness issues, Then importantly email it to your manager so they have proof this was done before you moved in so they can't say existing damages are your responsibility and that you returned it to the level of clean it was when you got it. As always be sure to READ THE LEASE and be aware of tenant laws in your area.

4 this one specifically! We were told we could break our lease with a 30 day notice and we had to find someone to take over.. ok great that’s doable well apparently it wasn’t in affect October-may and we were moving in Dec so we had to pay rent all the way through may

also controversial but dont get an animal as soon as you get yr own place… everyone wants to get a dog, cat ,wait at least a couple months once you know ACTUALLY how much money you have after all your bills and everything you NEED for urself monthly

As a leasing agent you are 100% correct!! I will say though if you are moving into an apartment in the summer it will be harder to look at your apartment before you sign the lease at SOME properties. Some properties have a high occupancy rate and a quick turnover. Another tip I like to give people is even though a lot of places give deals in the summer, LOOK AT MARKET PRICES. Apartment prices can go down based off the time of year!
