War Dogs is a 2016 black comedy crime film directed by Todd Phillips, starring Jonah Hill and Miles Teller. The movie is based on the true story of Efraim Diveroli and David Packouz, two young men who became involved in the international arms trade. Set during the Iraq War, the story follows David Packouz, a young Miami resident who is struggling financially and working as a massage therapist. Their biggest opportunity comes when they win a $300 million U.S. Army contract to supply ammunition to American and allied forces in Afghanistan. The enormous contract transforms their lives. They make huge amounts of money, travel internationally, and become involved with dangerous people. However, their lack of experience and increasingly reckless decisions begin putting their business—and their lives—in danger. The film also introduces Henry Girard, played by Bradley Cooper, a mysterious arms dealer who becomes involved in their increasingly complicated operations. Although War Dogs is a comedy, the story is based on real events. The real David Packouz and Efraim Diveroli became involved in government weapons contracts, and AEY Inc. was eventually suspended from doing business with the U.S. government after problems were discovered with ammunition supplied to the military. The real-life story became widely known after a Rolling Stone article about Packouz and Diveroli was published, and Guy Lawson later expanded the story into the book Arms and the Dudes, which inspired the film.
