The Red Ribbon Army FC3S and 180SX are one of my favorite examples of how good early-2000s Japanese twin drifting looked when the cars were built around the idea as much as the driving itself. At the 2004 ADVAN Drift Meeting at Sekia Hills, Shigenobu Koga’s FC3S and Kazutaka Yamashita’s 180SX competed together in the Twin Class and ended up taking the win. What makes the pair so good is how deliberately they were matched despite being completely different platforms. Both cars were painted in Toyota Vitz OEM red, carried similarly placed graphics, white five-spoke wheels, URAS aero, low rear spoilers and matching treatments around the fenders and hoods. The period feature even makes it clear that this was intentional: the goal was to make the FC and 180SX look like one team rather than two unrelated drift cars. Mechanically they were still very different. Koga’s FC3S used a TD06-20G turbo, while Yamashita’s 180SX ran an AX53B70 with Tomei Poncams and an A’PEXi Power FC in a MAF-less setup. Even then, both cars used horizontally mounted intercoolers, another small detail that helped keep the engine bays visually similar. Red Ribbon took twin drifting seriously. Their own goal was to establish themselves as the best twin team, and Team Orange was openly mentioned as both the benchmark and the rival. Seeing the two cars run door-to-door at Sekia really explains why. The FC is still the one that gets me most though. The proportions, ride height, white wheels and early competition-style graphics are basically perfect. // 🎥 2004 ADVAN DRIFT MEETING 🎥 Battle of Drift 2004 BM杯 九州大会 第2戦 in DECセキアヒルズサーキット 📖 Period Red Ribbon Army magazine feature // #5SpeedMotorsports #RedRibbonArmy #FC3S #180SX #JapaneseDrifting
