@cspanofficial: Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), a constitutional lawyer, said he was "disappointed" by the Supreme Court's decision upholding birthright citizenship as he learned about the opinion in real time during a press conference on Tuesday morning. "I'm very disappointed in that outcome," he told reporters after the court's holding was read to him. "I think it subjects the country to serious challenges going forward, and we'll have to deal with it as a Congress." President Trump signed an executive order on his first day back in office seeking to deny citizenship to children of undocumented immigrants as well as those studying, working or visiting the U.S. on time-limited visas. But justices said the order ran afoul of the citizenship clause of the 14th Amendment, which for more than a century has been understood and reaffirmed to extend to virtually all people born on U.S. soil. "You could say that's a textualist originalist view," Speaker Johnson said. "However, I do think that this has been grossly abused in recent years. That is the case that was being made by the plaintiffs in the case and we're very sympathetic to that because it is a serious problem." "It's one of those things that was intended to serve a noble and important purpose and has been thwarted and overused and abused," he added.
