Definitely the pay. You can love what you do but you shouldn’t sell yourself short

You need to like what you do for sure now a days I’m 56 and I’ve worked so much overtime in my days I’m so worn out I just want to retire but I can’t. I’m a heavy duty mechanic and I’m one person working on over a 100 piece’s of equipment and I’m so worn out trying to keep up with everything

i think alot of it is pay related. i worked at a shop 10yrs ago i enjoyed it but trying to buy tools plus pay bills is the reason i quit. i learned a ton from building engines/trans, doing machine work i didnt feel i was getting paid properly for my skills

I’m a true master tech ( dealer / ase / light engineering ) . The shop owners that think they are good mechanics are not even close to being a good diagnostics tech . And a good diagnostics tech should be $120 an hour . I dont help a shop now for less than $150 an hour . Also I own more in tools than most shops . I just got a dealer trans guru a job at a small hole in the wall trans shop for $80 an hour . A techs should be getting a chunk of shops profits . Otherwise you train them from scratch and realize it takes 10 years and most quite at this kids age .

I’m 38 and have been doing mechanic work since I was 16. I did equipment sales for 4 years right around Covid and then project manager for a year on a directional boring company. But I’m worn out turning wrenches for a living.

As a 15 year tech/foreman, pay is the biggest and working conditions - coming from the indie world can’t speak for dealers
