@heikoinvests: Most people retire thinking their money comes out tax-free. It doesn’t. 👀 Your RA splits into two portions when you retire and SARS taxes each one on completely different rules: 💰 The cash you take (up to ⅓): first R550k tax-free, then taxed on a rising scale. 📅 The monthly pension (the other ⅔): taxed like a salary, every single month. It’s not the same money taxed twice, it’s two portions, two sets of rules. Know this before you retire, not after. Disclaimer: Educational content only. Not financial advice.

So you save money for retirement from your salary where you already pay tax and then when you want to use it you get taxed again

Well, you're retirement annuity payment is a tax deduction annually, which is why they tax you when you're using the proceeds of that investment.

An RA does not pay a monthly pension nor does it pay out 1/3 while retaining 2/3. One has to buy a pension product with the RA funds, like a living annuity, in order to withdraw 1/3 and leave 2/3 in it to do a draw down (monthly pension payout). The entire amount in an RA must be used to buy a living annuity in order to withdraw the 1/3. The 2/3 transferred in the living annuity is tax free . The first R550k of the 1/3 payout is tax free.
