@culturalperspective: When Americans look at Xi Jinping, they see a dictator or a rival out to take over the world. Both are wrong. To understand Xi, you have to set down your own cultural perspective and pick up his. Start with one idea. America is a dignity culture, where worth is internal, equal, and permanent. China is a face culture, where worth is granted by others according to your place in a hierarchy. That reframes everything. When Xi talks about the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, Americans hear a slogan. In a face culture it is the whole game. China saw itself as the center of civilization for most of history, then lived through the century of humiliation from the 1840s to 1949. In a face culture you only recover that worth when the world treats you as central again. So Xi is not trying to conquer the world. He is trying to restore China to the center of it, where others come to China. That is older and subtler than empire, and easy to miss if you are watching for tanks. Add time. America thinks in election cycles. China thinks in generations, so Xi can pursue goals he will not finish in his lifetime. Add a tight culture that distrusts disorder, and a president for life reads as safety, not tyranny. Misread him and you make bad decisions. You expect him to fold under pressure when he was built to outlast, and you turn a bid for respect into a bid for conquest. The full analysis is free on my Substack. I see him as a very well educated man who cares about the advancement of his country, for the most part.

We are beginning to admire Xi more than Trump. I admire their system of meritocracy, leaders moving up village by town by province, etc.proving their worth to govern. What has been accomplished to remove poverty in China, and to bring it to a high tech country is amazing. We have a lot to learn. Sadly, that propaganda worked since the Cold War. But times are changing!

I’ve been studying Chinese for a little bit here and I was wondering why the character for Center or middle (中) is literally in the world for China (中国). Makes so much sense - central country.

This cultual context is completely absent in American press. TikTok is the only place I get exposure to high quality analysis and insights like this.

Xi Jingpin was ten years old when the Cultural Revolution began, and it had a profound impact on his development as a person. He reached adulthood with a profound fear of disorder, and believed that loyalty to the Communist Party was the key to preventing it—including that of the Cultural Revolution—which differs from most other subsequent leaders who believed that a lack of liberalisation was the cause.

Xi rose to leadership role through decades of hardship and struggles to prove his leadership skills and capability to solve majority of social and economic problems from village to province to city to Beijing. American political leaders can be made super popular and capable within weeks by relentless advertisement on mainstream media funded by business tycoons. Such costly packaging commercially as political leader to voters in a so-democratic country is proven a failure every four or years!

IMO, the West did not misread or misunderstood China or Xi. The oligarchs run the western govt and refuse China's model where the govt runs the oligarchs.
This is the key primary reason why the west continues to demonize China.

America needs more nuance like yours. Instead, it’s saddled with short term cronyism and nepotism. It deserves more.
