Albania's history is interesting because it is built around survival, pride, and refusing to disappear. Albanians are known for being intensely patriotic, partly because their country and people spent centuries caught between empires, occupations, poverty, dictatorship, war, and displacement. This is amplified by the fact that Albania was originally allied with the Soviet Union, but Enver Hoxha later broke away from it because he believed the Soviets were becoming too soft and not communist enough. That struggle reached one of its most dramatic moments in 1991, after the fall of Albania's communist regime, when thousands of desperate Albanians stormed the cargo ship Vlora in Durres and forced their way toward Italy. Estimates vary, but roughly 10,000 to over 20,000 people packed onto the ship, filling nearly every inch of it, hoping to escape economic collapse and start over. When the ship reached Bari, Italian authorities tried to stop it, but the captain refused to turn back because people onboard were exhausted, injured, and had gone without proper food or water.
