@ms.waddlebottom: This parent owns a company that helps parents advocate for their children with an IEP. That’s great…but…she made a video telling parents they have the right to ask teachers to come in during the summer to discuss an IEP. Teachers fired back saying not to suggest this as it isn’t beneficial for the parent because they wouldn’t be talking to the child’s teacher, but more likely to someone that doesn’t even know or work with the child. I am sure there were rude comments, but mostly people were saying they shouldn’t be expected to come to work on their days off. This parent is mad about the response. #teachersoftiktok #parentsoftiktok
Education is a public service, not a customer service. Parents are partners, students are learners, and teachers are professionals.

It’s a little scary that parents are referring to education as a ‘service’

If we were there to serve parents we wouldn’t be mandated reporters. We teach and protect children.

So if we are now in customer service, that means we can choose to not provide service to rude customers?!

This “grocery store” is closed from May 28 until August 17th. Come back next season.

But if the store is closed you cant get food from there.. .so when the school is closed the service providers which are teachers are not there.

The fact that grocery stores provide goods not services 🥲😅 so her metaphor doesn’t even work 😭

So, the teacher will give you the lesson plan and the iep modifications and you can do them at home because then the grocery store metaphor will match

Also, for this context… for public school… do the parents think they’re paying??? I’m confused??

she's confusing public education vs a homeschool program that would sell her the curriculum that she would then teach to her child(ren).

I love how parents "know their child best" but fail to realize that at their child is a completely different person at school. We know the true version of your child, we spend the longest time with them we see all sides.. But that's a story for another day

She’s selling an app where she suggests that parents input their child’s IEP! Which is wild

Teachers should start invoicing their customers appropriately then.

This gets to the core of a shift I’ve been feeling since the pandemic. Teachers are providing a service to the parents (from parental perspective) and that service is babysitting. I just don’t feel like school is being valued beyond the free childcare and that is the root of so very many problems.
