![translating a segement of banaadiri 🇸🇴 song “aw geedi shaambow”. this version is sung by banadiri artist @haaruun_leewaaye. The song was originally sung by legendary somali singer Abdullahi Zulfa - lead singer of the famous Iftiin band. Aw Geedi Shaambow (Gedi Ababow) was a powerful, legendary king who ruled the Bay region of Somalia, based around Buur Hakaba, approximately 700 to 1000 years ago. He is described for his authoritarian rule, described as a formidable leader whose reign involved significant tribal conflicts and strict, often oppressive, social, and even s*xual customs. Again like many banaadiri songs there is often a double meaning, a political reference. In this case many claim that the song is in reference to President Mohamed Siyad Barre, depicting him as The Geedi Shaambow of that time, indirectly praising him and warning anyone who may be of political threat of his [siyad barres] might and bravery, singing [Geesiyoow nin kuu gafey maa guleysahaayee? guulehysahaa] The song also comes at a time where it is alleged that many of Somalias singing troupes were “state owned” therefore bands were influenced/encouraged to sing and perform songs that favoured the state and since then many have referred to this as propaganda like tactic by the then government.
