SAINT OF THE DAY: ST. ROSE OF LIMA ⛪🌹🌎 _August 23 | Virgin | First Saint of the Americas | Mystic_ _St. Andrew’s Parish, Upper Bayelle | Archdiocese of Bamenda_ _“Faithful in worship and joyful in service”_ _“Apart from the cross, there is no other ladder by which we may get to heaven.”_ — *St. Rose of Lima* Summary by: Sonila Donald T. SHE CHOSE THE CROSS OVER THE CROWN *April 20, 1586, Lima, Peru.* Born *Isabel Flores de Oliva* to Gaspar Flores and María de Oliva. As a child she was so beautiful people called her _“Rose”_ — and the name stuck. But Rose wanted only one beauty: *the beauty of Christ.* She refused suitors. She cut her hair. She wore a crown of thorns hidden under flowers. At 20 she joined the *Third Order of St. Dominic* and turned her room into a tiny hermitage. Her family was poor. So she worked in the garden, sewed, and embroidered to help them. But her real work began at night. A HEART THAT LOVED THROUGH SUFFERING Lima in the 1600s had poverty, sickness, and ridicule for those who were devout. St. Rose’s penance was severe: She slept on broken glass and boards. She fasted often and did hard work in secret. She cared for the sick, the indigenous, and the poor in her home — washing them, feeding them, sitting with them. She endured *mockery from her own family and neighbors* for being “too holy.” Yet she smiled. She sang. She offered it all for souls. Her famous words guided her: _“Apart from the cross, there is no other ladder by which we may get to heaven.”_ She died young, *August 24, 1617, at 31 years old*, worn out by love. Buried at the *Basilica of Santo Domingo, Lima*. Canonized in 1671 — *First Saint of the Americas. Patroness of *Peru, South America, the Americas, the Philippines, florists, gardeners, and embroiderers.* People pray to her for *purity, patience in suffering, family quarrels, and protection of indigenous peoples.* 3 LESSONS FOR US AT ST. ANDREW’S TODAY: 1. MAKE YOUR SUFFERING A LADDER Life in Bamenda can be hard — school fees, family quarrels, sickness, unemployment. Rose teaches us: *offer it with Jesus.* _“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”_ — *Philippians 4:13* Your cross is not wasted. It leads to heaven. 2. SERVE THE POOR IN SECRET Rose didn’t wait for big projects. She opened her home. Youth, CWA, Legion: visit one sick person this week. Give one meal. Pray with one struggling family. _“Whatever you did for the least of these, you did for me.”_ — *Matthew 25:40* 3. SAY YES TO GOD EARLY — A WORD TO YOUNG PEOPLE Rose was 11 when she vowed her life to Christ. God is still calling today. To *priesthood, religious life, marriage, single life for the Kingdom.* Don’t be afraid. Holiness is not boring — it’s the greatest adventure. _“Here I am, Lord. Send me.”_ — *Isaiah 6:8* Talk to your parish priest or a sister about discerning your vocation. PRAYER TO ST. ROSE OF LIMA: St. Rose of Lima, flower of the Americas, You turned suffering into love and your home into a hospital for the poor. Teach us patience in trials, purity of heart, and courage to serve. Bless our youth. Raise up priests, sisters, and holy families from St. Andrew’s. Help us climb to heaven on the ladder of the Cross. *St. Rose of Lima, pray for us.* Amen. 🙏 *St. Rose of Lima, pray for us.* *St. Rose, make us faithful in worship and joyful in service.* #SaintOfTheDay #StRoseOfLima #August23 #FirstSaintOfTheAmericas #Dominican --- *For reflection:* What “cross” in your life today can you offer to Jesus like St. Rose did? And young people: Is God whispering to you about a vocation? Share below 👇
