@zacharyburrabel: Crazy thing - the amount of money you’d have left would earn enough per year in returns ( on average ) to pay for college if you decided to go. If it then just stayed in the sp500 for 20 more years it’d be worth $7m. 40 years ( retirement age ) you’d have $52m left - and that’s using that money to pay for 4 year of college. Of course you can have downturns, prior results aren’t guarantees of future performance but it makes you think…
It’s worth all the money and more. I went to public school in the north east and my brother went to private school. I’m doing well, a doctor making average doctor money and my brother is in big finance (which he got through school network) and make more in a year than I will make in a decade working as a doctor.

I wrestle with the question every month when I send on the payment. My daughter’s school is $42k per year split on ten $4200 payments. If i invested that money in the S&P instead i could hand her a $1M graduation gift when she turns 18. The education and atmosphere is definitely better than public school , but is ur $1M better? Still not sure

@randomname8813: Literally considering now, our daughter is gifted and we’re thinking private school bc our public school sucks. $40k a year, but my rationale is that investing in her growth now at 2nd grade is more valuable and exponential than saving for whatever college might look like in ten years

This has no answer because you are asking where people’s personal values are. Some may choose public with option to travel or keeping a parent at home, some may choose private for the community. School is only a part of ingredients that goes into one’s life. It does not guarantee an outcome. It’s easy to look at it on a surface level and discuss monetary value of it, just because there is a “free” option but money is also relative to how much or little you have. One is not better than the other and if parents are looking at kids schools or experiences with ROI in mind, the value is not in what jobs they get later in life but what values they live their lives with.

My parents sent me to a private Catholic school from 2nd to 12th grade, and the friends I made in elementary school are still my friends today. I'm 34. High school was all girls, and it was the best, and I wouldn’t change a thing.

One son was fine in public school. The other was very clearly not. He blossomed in private school and that confidence carried him - really depends on the kid

the other piece that's really interesting is property taxes - living in NY (close to NYC), property taxes can be similar to private tuition in certain really good public school districts, we have weighed this vs private school in less expensive areas

It's not just the education our kids are getting for the money. They are also learning work ethic, compassion, and integrity. They are surrounded by like-minded students and families who are there to get the most out of their education and not just sit in a seat or caused distractions. I did it over again in a heartbeat.

you pay for the network and cachet, if it wasn’t worth it rich people would stop sending their kids… send your kids if you can and participate

Sometimes it is about safety or sporting opportunities. It definitely affects who they hang around and what they are exposed to or not exposed to. It also many times sets a tone for how they behave in public and around adults. So is it worth $1M? Maybe not, but if they aren't here to see 18 no parent would want that $1M anyway.

i think its quite straightforward,
The Rich want there children mixing with the Rich.
no Wealthy parent wants to be driving their children to a house worth less then their car for a Birthday party.
for a man who loves his business/First class travel, you do not enjoy mixing with the poor, you talk of reward travel, which is accessible primarily by the well off who rack up mega points, as saving rich people money also opens doors.
but to us poor people, you also offer a window to an inaccessible world.
my work travel funds my holidays through points/spend flights & hotels, but its clear im not among my own when I walk in looking like the helps help

Totally depends on the public school district. They are not all equal. Sometimes you pay for a higher cost property to get into a better district or do what my parents did, stay in the poor inner city district and pay for private schools.
