@adam_nowhere: Al Ula, Hijaz, 1326 CE. (Episode 3: A pause after the desert) After crossing the deadly road beyond Tabuk, Ibn Battuta reached al-Hijr — today’s Hegra, near AlUla — where the red-rock dwellings of Thamud stood in silence. Then the Hajj caravan stopped at al-‘Ula’s oasis to wash their clothes, unload the camels, resupply, and recover before continuing toward Medina. #IbnBattuta #AlUla #Hajj #History #سعودية
Ibn Battuta writes that after Tabuk the caravan reached al-Hijr, where there was abundant water, but the pilgrims did not drink from it. He describes the dwellings of Thamud as carved into red rock, with sculpted thresholds.
He then says al-‘Ula was a large and pleasant village with palm-gardens and springs. The pilgrims stayed there four days to wash their clothes, resupply, and leave behind anything they did not need before the road to Medina.
