One could make an argument that reading reddit stories on tiktok is along the same lines as writing fanfiction - after all, it was written by someone else so the Tiktokers are "ripping off someone else's work"

I feel like this is out of your depth in this subject. People write fanfiction because they love the media they’re writing about, they do it for fun and for free and contributing to her fandom. Joining a writing club is totally cool because she’s trying to learn how to be a better writer.

Definitely YTA, that's such an outdated view on fanfiction, and you can't make any money off of AO3 which is the most popular fanfiction hosting site, so she's likely not making any money whatsoever.

Fanfiction writers are not lazy!!! Some of the best stories I’ve read were fanfiction stories!! Just because they used characters that already exist doesn’t mean they didn’t work hard!!

Hearing you guys' take for this was rough. :/ Have you read fanfiction on websites like ao3? I've read such masterpieces on there that they could EASILY become bestselling standalone stories and books if they weren't using a source material as a base. Saying it's a ripoff is wildly inaccurate, since most fanfiction will take the preexisting characters and put them in a completely new universe and plot. Even the fanfics that don't take massive creative liberties where it's extremely obvious the author's contribution was immense, and the source material was just something used to build on.

"how do you make money off fanfiction" you dont. you simply dont. fanfiction exists in a gray area legally and one of its protections is the fact its not monetized. fanfictiins that get puboished have the "serial numbers worn off" usually because they are removed enough from the original that with minimal changes it exists as its own work. like 50 shades was twilight fanfiction before it got edited

fanfiction is a labour of love done out of appreciation to the source material. It's how people cut their teeth on writing and find their voice as an author. it's largely harmless. I found I loved writing through fanfic and some fanfics are amazing because they're not canon but explore the characters I adore.

Fanfics are not ripping off someone elses work! They’re still original stories they just build off a pre-existing base. Ripping off someone’s work would be rewriting it 1-1 but changing small things like names, thats not what fanfic is.

The way you guys described fan fiction by making it sound like it's just a rip-off of the original media is wrong. Fan fiction could be anything from character studies, alternate universes, exploring a specific group of characters together, and infinitely more. You don't make money off of fanfics. At least you're not supposed to. It's a hobby, not something you should monitize at all. The only benefit you should be getting is personal satisfaction

I’d also like to point out fanfiction can be almost entirely your own characters just in the same world as a franchise. I’ve made a lot of stuff just for myself for fun that would be considered fanfic but it’s entirely about my own characters in the world of a story because I like that worlds magic system or smth. Fanfiction can be a great way to learn how to get into writing and such

When I was a teen I wrote a fanfic for THE 10th KINGDOM. It was a sequel with Wolf and Virginia’s daughter. Parents are missing and she ended up in the fantasy land. I always felt there should have been a sequel and no one made it….so I did.

YTA. Some fanfiction is better written than published books. Real writers support writing, whether “original” or fanfiction. All fiction is inspired by previous works. What even is the point of gatekeeping writing like this? Your writing isn’t “better” because it’s “original”.

Unless you profit from fanfiction, it’s completely fine. It’s not canon, it’s just using your imagination with characters that already exists. Also, fanfic has SO many different genres aswell - horror, romance, and so many others. A fanfic could be Spongebob becoming a human for 1 day. So i rly dont see a problem in fanfic in general
