oh my so this is actually something I think about a lot so let me be insufferable for a moment. In the books Hannibal is 42 and Will is somewhere around that ago too when they first meet. In the show they have an age gap, but still they meet relatively late in their lives. So what keeps me up at night is that they’ve spent all those years, wandering on their own, probably convinced that they’ll never be truly seen or understood by someone and that’s that. Obviously i’m not trying to say that either of them spent their younger years dreaming of the connection they’ll have later on, because they just don’t strike me as the hopeful romantic type. But surely the thought had to cross their minds, in Hannibal’s case in probably some narcissistic way as in “the pigs aren’t my equals so how could they even begin to try to understand what am I and how I operate?” and the thought probably surfaced in Will just as in the show when he was/is always misunderstood by his coworkers and the people that surround him. As Hugh Dancy said in an interview we have to imagine it like we think we’re the only chess players in the world, the only ones that know of the game, understand it, play it etc. and then someone walks in with a chess board. I think that metaphor he used captures it really well, and i’m sure both Will and Hannibal enjoyed their time together to some extent, as they finally found their match, in a world where they thought that couldn’t be.
