I don’t think he was lonely, rather he was alone and comfortable in that state. Once Will enters his life he’s no longer alone, finds joy in the company. When Will leaves that’s when he feels loneliness

the extent of their loneliness kills me. will who loves people but is unable to form any sort of relationship with anyone because he is constantly taking in everyone's emotions and it's overwhelming, and also because people can't see past his weirdness and see him as someone who needs fixing. so he gives up entirely in spite of needing connection with humans, and connects with animals instead. then you have hannibal who, conversely, loves people as well, or at least enjoys being in their company. he surrounds himself with people, thrives in social settings. however, he is never able to form a true connection with anyone because he is obligated to wear his person suit all the time. all his relationships are based on dishonesty, no matter how much genuine affection he might feel for someone. hannibal was the first person to look at will and truly see him as an equal, not with pity. and will was the only person who could truly understand hannibal's true self despite their differences, and still choose to stay with that knowledge of who he is. they make me sick lol
