@tilscience: This island is one of the most restricted places in the world and is a living laboratory Surtsey Island didn’t exist until 1963, when underwater volcanic eruptions built it from nothing. Iceland immediately declared it off limits except for a handful of scientists who began conducting a 60 year long experiment Here are the results of that experiment #DidYouKnow #scienceexperiments #geology #evolution
Human poo= tomato plant. Seeds are really strong huh

Fun fact: Surtsey means “Surt’s island” so Surtsey Island means … yes, Surt’s island island 😁 (Surt is a giant in the nors mythology)

Can we normalize decolonizing science and stop using words like colonize when talking about natural phenomenon

wow that’s actually crazy bc when u first mentioned birds i just assumed that whatever seeds made it to the island would be whatever seeds the birds happen to bring to the island, and then u went into how that was actually proven to be the case. i feel like that just goes to show sometimes the simplest answer is the correct answer lol.

Fun fact, surtseyan eruptions (a type of eruption that occurs in shallow water where magma comes in contact with that water) were named after this volcano.

From now on I'm going to tell my boss, it took 60 years to realize that bird poop caused plants to grow on an island. I'm just one man, be happy that I even gave you an answer.

Don't understand the distinction at around halfway. It was theorised that plants showing up would be using long-distance methods like birds to disperse but it was then shown that it is ... birds? 😅

Im confused why it was assumed birds were slower than seeds at spreading? This happened for new zealand & galapagos too, resulting in friendly flightless birds 🐦 🥰🥰

I first knew about Surtsey from a modern illustrated book bought by my family members in the 1990s. At the time it was billed as the newest volcanic island in the world.
