As an English PhD student, I was literally assigned ONE THOUSAND pages of reading a week… and I still thought I was supposed to do it all

Hello Dr. Erin, can you give a method to skim a research paper effectively (while retaining key information from the article). The time boundaries story really got me. Thank you.

I learned really fast not to read every single article. My process is read the abstract -> read the conclusion/discussion. If it’s pertinent, read the article.

What do you recommend to someone who compares themselves to others? I am currently in my undergrad for Psychology. There is a particular girl to whom I compare myself regularly.

My first year in grad school, I definitely read too much before learning to skim. I also came to the painful realization that the classes I wanted to take were always all at the same time

I wish I had this advice at the beginning of my first year of grad school 😭 I definitely underestimated the amount of seminars, lectures, conferences, and webinars that you get inundated with both within your program and outside of your program. Learning to say no and pick and choose the most effective and relevant opportunities is a skill worth developing.

I’m so confused about the reading part… What’s the point of assigning a reading if not to read the whole thing? I feel like you lose a lot of really important details and information if you just skim and can’t really internalize the deeper message if you don’t read the whole thing.

Oof this hits deep. Especially the reading. I thought that I had to read everything so I would be a “master” in field 😳

How do you effectively skim the content?? One of my professors told us the same thing but I feel like if I skim I’m going to miss something important.. tips or advice would be appreciated 😂

I just learned to say no to an internship opportunity for this summer, I had been in contact with them for months and now I don’t want to it. I told myself it’s okay because this only my first year of grad an I’ll have plenty of more opportunities to explore and learn and the field ✨

Read only the abstract, intro, methods (short—just skim), results, conclusions and implications for future research. Don’t read the entire articles. Remember every person has a different way of communicating. I’m straightforward, so it comes out mean, even if it isn’t. Get to know all the professors, even if they aren’t in your area of expertise, take classes outside of your field of study to get different perspectives.

Hi!! I’m entering my first year of my masters program for school psychology! I just started to put my schedule together (13 credits (normal!) 20 hours a week for my GA position, and I haven’t even been placed for my practicum!) Can you make a video about balancing your personal life and grad school life! I feel like I’m going to drown!
