Begbie Falls via Bluff Trail, near Revelstoke, British Columbia 5.1 km | 242 m elevation gain | Moderate | 1.5–2 hours | Out & back BC’s southeast roadtrip series. Begbie Falls sits deep inland, hundreds of kilometres from the Pacific, yet the forest around it behaves like a rainforest, because the Columbia Mountains trap enough winter snow to melt slowly all summer, feeding the ground water long after coastal rain would have stopped. The result is one of the only inland temperate rainforests on the planet. Devil’s club and skunk cabbage, both plants that can only survive where soil never fully dries out, crowd the low ground beside the trail. Moss doesn’t just grow here, it takes over — coating fallen logs so completely that the wood underneath disappears. That thick moss is doing a job: sealing in the moisture that keeps this whole system running. The trail’s final stretch drops sharply through this same wet, mossy world, and the falls announce themselves before they’re visible. Begbie Creek has spent its whole run cutting through a smaller side valley that the last ice age never carved as deep as the massive trough beside it, so where the creek finally catches up to the main valley floor, it has nowhere to go but down, fast. The water drops over exposed bedrock into a narrow gorge, throwing enough spray into the air to cool the forest around it even in summer heat. Stand close and the falls stop being background noise; the sound becomes physical, a wall of pressure you feel before you fully see the water. At the bottom, the creek goes quiet almost immediately, easing out into Upper Arrow Lake like nothing happened. That contrast, chaos collapsing into stillness in the space of a few metres, is the whole payoff of the hike, and it belongs to a mountain valley system still actively being shaped by the same water cutting through it today. @Revelstoke #trailqwest #waterfall #revelstoke #explorebc #hike
