there is a reason that the thematic backstory in TV and movies are so popular. it's because it's much more interesting to have a villain with a reason to do the things they do rather than simply twirling their moustache and laughing maniacally. it's also much more emotionally charged, to the point sometimes you almost want to cheer for the bad guy.
