@drsarahhensley: A lot of people believe that if they forgive someone, they're giving them permission to hurt them again. The science suggests something different. Forgiveness and staying are not the same thing. You can forgive someone without giving them continued access to you. In fact, research has found that after major relationship betrayals, pairing forgiveness with staying can actually increase the likelihood of future betrayal because the behavior no longer carries the same consequence. Forgiveness is about setting *you* free. Boundaries are about deciding who gets access to you. And if protecting trust matters to you, check out @Verafied App, the relationship registry helping bring more transparency and accountability to modern dating. #drsarahhensley #infidelity #relationshipscience #boundaries #forgiveness
I stayed and it happened again! Let me tell you about the pain and hurt I could have saved myself from if I left the first time!!

In my opinion, I think you should always leave the first time. I stayed with my ex partner for 4 1/2 years after they cheated on me the first time and it caused a lot of anxiety and arguments because when I felt that they were doing something they shouldn’t be or hiding things. They flipped the script onto me. Four months ago, I found out that she was cheating on me with her manager. We broke up and they are now together. If I would have left the first time, I wouldn’t have had to worry about if she was cheating on me throughout the relationship and I wouldn’t have had to deal with all of the bull crap that I had to deal with four months ago. It has completely changed me as a person in the way that I view love or relationship relationships in general.

I risked it happening again. I lost that risk. I had no choice to divorce her. It took me years to get over that disappointment and that anger again. Part of it is, when to just stop asking questions where there no answers. or at least no answers forthcoming. Once you let go of that need for answers. That anger starts to completely go away. It took me about 7 or 8 years.

There’s no way I could stay that’s just not something that I could get over enough to stay with my wife. I could forgive her and I would still love her but I couldn’t stay with her, loyalty is too important to me.

I agree with this. Although in my relationship we both cheated.. have made selfish choices throughout the years.. we broke up.. going on 13 years together now.. we both matured and realized we kept choosing each other for a reason.

They never do it just once (IMO) always leave even if you don’t want to bc I whole heartedly agree with this. I’ve stayed in the past and they always did it again and usually multiple times after until I left, no matter how many times they said they’d stop or never do it again. They did.

I can attest to this a trillion percent sadly!!
The transgression wasn't cheating... He used drugs while telling me he was not. I, as an addict in recovery, understand that relapses can happen so yes I forgave him..
I regret it immensely!!!
I opened the door to what would become 5 years of lies and deceit.
DON'T DO IT LADIES!!!!!!!
