![[⚠️ Edit:] Some have pointed out that there may well be earlier traditions of Black spirituals outside of Black lined-out singing as well, that could go back further to the 1600s. So I believe some conversations with musicologists should be in order! This should also possibly be called “one of the oldest English language singing traditions in the US,” rather than “non-Native,” since its possible that some French and Spanish songs are older. Either way it’s beautiful, and I hope you enjoy. [Original caption] Blair Branch Regular Baptist Church in Jeremiah Kentucky graciously allowed me to record their singing before this Sunday service. “Lined-out” singing is famed for its ghostly and soulful sound. Ask anyone who sings it, and they’ll tell you they don’t find it sad, but an expression of joy. You can also find a version of it, it’s ancestor, in the psalm singing traditions in Scotland, particularly in the Hebrides, which are beautiful, but different. I really wonder how much this was impacted by Black music traditions. Since there are Black communities who do lined out singing too, I imagine there’s some important history there!
