My grandfather was a publisher for the larger part of his 70 year career & I wish so badly I’d have gotten to do a series like this with him! He’d love the awareness you’re giving publishing along with the time spent with your daughter 🫶🏼 I wish I could hear his feedback on these songs! ❤️🩹 Keep it up, they’ll be treasures for long times to come.

Wouldn't you say that a publisher works "against" the artist sometimes so their music plays well to the lowest common denominator? Maybe some experimentation is OK but nothing too anti-adverts kind.

I hear you talk a lot about the potential for different artists to cover a song - is that a really big thing? Obviously I know it happens sometimes, but more often than not I feel like covers are more of a one-off live performance as opposed to studio recordings (ofc I can think of some studio recorded cover examples, just doesn’t seem like that big a part of the industry for how much I’ve heard you mention it!). Or when you say that, are you more thinking that their writing style means they could write for a range of others easily and that’s where the benefit might come in for the publisher?

How does a publisher collect the royalties? Do they rely on tv and radio stations across the world to send off the information, or would a publisher be more proactive? And if a song is used for an advert, does the writer/artist have to give permission or is it more of a contract thing where they could allow, or not allow, the label to sell the song for adverts?

I suppose you do not need a specific degree, but maybe past experience can be helpful? love your videos, super interesting and can’t wait for more reactions (may I recommend the band “sports”? i think they’re quite cool)

How much would an artist make in royalties on average for a big hit and how are you able to collect and track that song in real time if it’s played everywhere on all streaming platforms, radio stations across the nation and potentially internationally and places like YouTube etc if they’re all being streamed from various different sources especially if it’s a big popular hit for you to be able to collect said royalties?

I’ve always felt like the music industry is deliberately split into so many unnecessary roles, almost like it’s setup to make as many people as possible money. Labels, publishers, managers, agents, promoters…who have I forgotten?🤣
