I wrote an analysis on Genesis:
Genesis is all metaphor for the loss of childhood, the Bible says the garden of Eden was a perfect world, beautiful and sinless, that's the state of childhood and once they ate the fruit of knowledge (allegory for the loss of virginity), they entered adulthood. Scholars and priests say menstruation is the "woman's punishment" for eating the fruit but that's not quite it, it only represents the entering of puberty. "Genesis" means birth in greek and that makes so much sense because Adam and Eve were originally naked just like newborns, but after being influenced by the world they hid their bodies, just how a baby is dressed by their elders, making them less animal and more man. Why does Christ say we should be more like children in Matthew 18:3? Because maturing puts one in danger of judgement as they now know the difference between good and evil, that said, maturing is also necessary, and that's exactly why God didn't stop them from eating the fruit even though He could have done it.
So why would God punish them for sinning when it was in their nature to sin? After all, Adam did not know that the act of sexual intercourse was a sin. But that's fine, because at this point in time it was not as the 10 commandments were still not written, meaning there was no law, and most importantly no knowledge of the law as we know it, so no, the sin was not sex. What Adam did have knowledge of was God's command: "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die." Genesis 2:17-18
By dissobeying God, they rejected His authority and they were sent to live away from Eden. The old Adam had to be killed in order for the new Adam to be reborn.
In conclusion, the story of Adam and Eve doesn't refer to the begining of just two individuals but it describes humanity as a whole:
Adam and Eve represent each one of us, every woman from the first to the last, is Eve, and every man that has existed or will exist is Adam.
