LIFEBEYONDLIMITS :
Will tell u a story abt Cameroon my motherland lcated in Central Africa often referred to as "Africa in Miniature" because of its rich diversity in geography, culture, and languages. Before colonial rule, the region was home to powerful kingdoms & communities such as the Bamum, Tikar, Fulani, and many other ethnic groups, each with its own traditions & systems of governance.
In 1884, Cameroon became a German colony known as Kamerun after Germany signed treaties with local chiefs along the coast. During German rule, infrastructure such as railways, roads, & plantations was developed, but forced labor & harsh colonial policies caused widespread suffering among the local population.
After Germany's defeat in World War I, the territory was divided between France & United Kingdom under mandates from the League of Nations. France administered about 80% of the territory (French Cameroon), while Britain governed the remaining part as Northern and Southern British Cameroons.
French Cameroon gained independence on 1 January 1960 under the leadership of Ahmadou Ahidjo. In 1961, following a United Nations-sponsored plebiscite, Southern British Cameroons voted to reunify with the newly independent Republic of Cameroon, while Northern Cameroons chose to join Nigeria. This led to the creation of the Federal Republic of Cameroon, recognizing both English- and French-speaking regions.
In 1972, the federal system was abolished in favor of a unitary state, and in 1984 the country became the Republic of Cameroon. Many English-speaking Cameroonians later argued that the abolition of federalism reduced their political autonomy and marginalized their legal and educational systems. These grievances contributed to growing tensions, protests in 2016, and the ongoing armed conflict in the North-West and South-West regions, often referred to as the Anglophone Crisis.
Today, Cameroon is home to over 250 ethnic groups and more than 240 indigenous languages. Although it possesses abundant natural resources and significant cultural diversity, the country continues to face political, economic, and security challenges while many citizens hope for lasting peace, justice, and inclusive governance
