In 2021, an independent lab found benzene — a known carcinogen — in dozens of sunscreens, including multiple Neutrogena sprays. J&J recalled five Neutrogena and Aveeno aerosol lines. Here’s the number that never made the label: the FDA’s report on the recalled products showed benzene as high as 23 parts per million — more than ten times the ceiling the FDA advises. And the FDA’s actual position is that sunscreen should contain no benzene at all. Benzene was never an ingredient. It came from contamination in the spray itself — so nothing on the bottle could have warned you. The recall stayed quiet, too. It didn’t even show up in the FDA’s main sunscreen-recall list. Consumer Reports had to pull the safety report through a public-records request. Benzene is the same carcinogen in diesel exhaust, and it’s linked to leukemia and blood cancers. Banana Boat and Copperto ne got hit with their own benzene recalls. ThinkBaby scanned clean — mineral, non-aerosol, no propellant to contaminate. The label said protection. The recall said otherwise.
