@emilyt_therapy: Too often, people are judged for the very behaviors that developed as a way to survive overwhelming emotional pain. Research on trauma, attachment, and emotion regulation consistently shows that behaviors like self harm, suicidality, substance use, dissociation, impulsive behaviors, and disordered eating often function as attempts to cope when the nervous system has learned that survival matters more than long term wellbeing. These behaviors can absolutely become dangerous and destructive. But reducing shame, increasing safety, and understanding the function of behavior will always be more effective than punishment. We cannot ask people to heal while condemning the strategies that helped keep them alive long enough to get here ❤️🩹 ————————————————————- #borderlinepersonalitydisorder #bpdtiktok #copingskills #therapistsontiktok #traumahealing

I had a therapist. She told me if I did anything maladaptive, she was not gonna see me anymore and she used to that against me for nine months. She was the worst therapist I ever had Decatur, Georgia. Her name was Stephanie. never see her.

What if they’re coping skills are very risky and could potentially have a high risk of accidental injury that leads to ☠️😵 though like certain substance abuse . So my question would be would you at least guide them to a mat program or something because some coping skills are a lot more risky than others

Substance abuse and isolation. I need to isolate in order to tame my emotions. Friends means fights. I need to remain stable. That means no friends.

I heard on a podcast once that if your coping skill has kept you alive and has helped you survive for the season of life you’re in then that’s what matters and as a therapist myself, I try to use this with my clients!

Wow. Never heard anyone say this. Thank You. Who would really want "maladaptive" coping skills where they are judged like so many so often are( like myself) There is enough to deal with in life without a judgemental attached. If a therapist won't or cant meet where I'm at how can they really help me? I wish you were my therapist. Been heavily judged and disregarded.

As someone who really really struggles with behaviors like this I can’t thank you enough for this. I’ll never not realize how lucky I am to have a therapist who doesn’t judge me and creates the safe space for me you’ve described.
