A quick-thinking 10-year-old recently saved her younger brother after he started choking on a hard candy while jumping on a trampoline at their home in Lavon, Texas. “In a moment that could have ended in tragedy, Leah, daughter of Lavon Police Department Special Programs Admin Heather James, stayed calm under pressure and saved her brother’s life when he began choking,” the Lavon Police Department (LPD) wrote in a post on Facebook. The video shows Leah and her little brother, 7-year-old Logan, standing on a trampoline as they were gearing up to participate in the viral Warhead Challenge, which involves tasting the sour candy and seeing who makes a sour face first. Leah and Logan both popped the candy into their mouths and Logan bounced onto his back, but flipped over onto all fours and let out a cough. Leah quickly realized the candy was lodged in his throat and jumped into action, performing abdominal thrusts (previously known as the Heimlich maneuver) and successfully dislodging the candy. According to LPD, Leah’s mom taught her the lifesaving skill during a babysitter program, which included instruction on abdominal thrusts. “Leah knew exactly what to do in that critical moment. And because of her quick thinking and courage, her brother is safe today,” LPD wrote. “This was a real life-or-death emergency, and Leah proved that age is no barrier when it comes to being a hero.” LPD later wrote that Leah would be officially recognized for her “heroic” actions at a Lavon City Council meeting in November.
