Heavy on the booking reservations! My first time eating in Tokyo was not as wonderful as everyone on TikTok made it out to be because I didn't have reservations or knew where to go. Not every random sushi and ramen restaurant you go to will be great. Make those reservations a month in advance! My second trip was a wonderful eating experience because of it.

Download the tabelog app for restaurant reservations. Tons of same day Omikase places. Buy a Welcome Suica card as soon as you arrive at the airport. Use this for the JR train lines (A MUST) and to use at 7/11, Lawson, and Family Mart. You will need cash. Exchange at the airport.

As someone who’s been to 80 countries, the “never bring USD” isn’t a one fit all. Many countries you get 30-40-60% more if you exchange crisp $100 bills

YES to reservations!! we stayed in ginza and one night, we spent over an hour walking into every restaurant we saw and not a single one had a table available within the next two hours 🥲 ofc this depends on the time you visit, the area, etc. but next time i’d rather just make reservations and avoid this altogether

I’ve been to Japan and I disagree with the reservations, unless you want to go to a fancy tourist restaurant, I don’t see a point. I came across so many high quality and cheap restaurants without any reservations. I do agree with having a bank and card that doesn’t charge for exchange rates. Now, if you are planning to go to a shrine/temple and buy omamoris, you will need cash. Guys, it’s okay to get lost in Japan, it’s safe and fun. Don’t overwhelm yourself, take your time in each play your visit and enjoy. Your itinerary does not need to be packed.

💯 on reserving things in advance, but that's usually for the larger, fancier, more touristy-viral places. My best food experiences have been at small little holes in the wall that are hidden gems that usually only locals know about... we're talking about tiny little places that don't even have a sign and are standing room only tucked away in a small alley. I have Japanese cousins who know these places and they've all been bangers 👌 So make a Japanese friend who knows where to go 😁

if you bank with chase , you can do usd currency exchange for yen. You have to request the currency exchange with a bank teller, have cash ready for how much yen you would like but make sure you are prepared with your cash!

i recommend linking your debit card to your apple cash and just reload when you need money to pay. when you use apple cash it doesn’t take out any exchange fees!
