The East is boring unless you are happy to stay within the hotels and do a few excursions. The North is by far the most lively, especially if you are self-catering and want more choices for restaurants and shopping. The West is the second most lively after the North. The South is again like the East, not much going on outside of the hotel, but a huge advantage is that the journey time from the airport is slightly shorter. I lived in Mauritius for 12 years, and my house was in the North, Peryebere. I always hated the airport journey as it can take 90 minutes depending on traffic. Hopefully, the new road projects will reduce the journey time.

No worries, it's an island. No matter which direction you travel, you will find the ocean. In my opinion, Tamarin is the sweet spot. Grand Baie can be overwhelming, but nightlife, including live music, is top shelf. For a slow, calm chill, Le Morne/ Black River is a good bet.
